The relationship between homework and student achievement is complex. One significant factor other than homework affecting achievement includes home life. Some students do not have the tools or support at home to complete homework. (Protheroe, 2009).Homework and Immigrant Students It is common, due to challenges related to relocation in a new country that immigrant students lag behind native students in academic achievement. Homework, which can be completed slowly, thoughtfully, and with assistance, can be one way to close the achievement gap between these groups of students.Homework refers to tasks given to pupils by their teachers to be completed outside of usual lessons. Common homework activities in secondary schools are completing tasks assigned in lessons, such as practicing further questions or problems in mathematics, or preparing for tasks in future lessons.
Proponents of homework say that it improves student achievement and allows for independent learning of classroom and life skills. They also say that homework gives parents the opportunity to monitor their child's learning and see how they are progressing academically.Home environments; student characteristics, subject matter, and grade level all influence the effect of homework on student achievement. Although the variety among every child's preferred learning style is evident, there is disagreement as to whether efforts should be made to change or expand students learning preferences to conform to classroom instructions or to adapt to the students.
